About the role
You’ll inherit and become the technical owner of a vertically integrated, ultra-low-latency US equities and options trading platform serving 100+ professional traders. It’s a stable, production-proven system with a deep C++ core and some legacy. Your job: learn it fast, keep it healthy, and steer its evolution — tactically (urgent incidents, on-call) and strategically (architecture, modernization, retiring legacy safely). Dedicated SREs, playbooks, and procedures are already in place.
We’re expanding a team with two engineers who will work as a pair of complementary owners: one anchoring the electronic-trading domain, one bringing deep low-latency Linux systems skills (the trading domain is learnable — we’ll level the role to your profile during the process). The core is Linux (RHEL9, GCC, CMake).
The trading front-end is a .NET/Windows GUI owned separately; you’ll touch its native interop boundary, not the GUI itself.
What success looks like
Within months, you’re among the people who understand the system best, able to fix it fast and decide where it should go, keeping a stable platform stable while steadily reducing its legacy weight and using AI tooling to move faster than its size would normally allow.
Expertise you need
- 8+ years of professional C++ on latency-sensitive Linux backends. You think in cache lines, allocations, and tail latency.
- Solid CS fundamentals: algorithms and data structures, operating systems, networking, and databases — the depth to reason from first principles when the abstractions leak.
- Low-latency techniques: kernel-bypass networking (Solarflare/AMD Onload, ef_vi, TCPDirect or equivalents like DPDK, RDMA, AF_XDP), lock-free structures, CPU pinning, multicast UDP, and the surrounding stack (ZeroMQ or similar, Protocol Buffers, Boost, CMake).
- Fast study of large, unfamiliar codebases: you build a mental model quickly and become the go-to owner. You’ve owned a large, long-lived C++ system through a migration and know how to retire a legacy path without breaking production.
- Calm and methodical under pressure, handling urgent issues on a live financial system, including on-call during US market hours.
- Strong agentic-development skills: fluent with an AI coding agent (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode, Pi, or similar): managing skills/context, orchestrating subagents, and designing workflows to navigate and modify a huge codebase. You engineer the tool to its maximum, not passively poke prompts.
Nice to have
- Electronic trading background: market data, exchange connectivity, native feeds, order books, FIX engines, OMS/execution.
- Production trading-ops instincts (latency monitoring, capture/replay).
- Working knowledge of .NET/C# native interop.
